BMT Expertise Applied to Oiler Conversion
The recent commissioning of HMAS Sirius at Garden
Island, Western Australia, was witnessed with a sense of achievement by BMT Defence Services
(Australia) Pty Ltd, who worked closely with the Australian Defence
Materiel Organisation to provide an independent assessment of the conversion
designs developed by contractors.
With support from sister subsidiary BMT Defence Services Ltd in Bath in England,
also a member of the BMT group of companies, BMT Defence Services (Australia)
ensured that they delivered what the Royal Australian Navy needed and that they
satisfied both the appropriate civil classification rules and naval best
practice.
The professional engineering staff at BMT that
undertook the Delos conversion review work
have many years experience of design work that has helped keep the British
auxiliary vessels of the Royal Fleet Auxiliary operating safely and capably at
sea in support of the Royal Navy.
BMT was able to provide this advice because of
the deep technical knowledge of its people and the breadth of expertise
available across the network of international subsidiaries; the years of design
experience providing through life support for in-service fleet auxiliaries, and
because its impartiality is assured by the ownership structure of parent
company, BMT Ltd, which is independent of any shipbuilder or marine equipment
supplier.
Nathan Harding, Managing Director for BMT Defence
Services (Australia)
says: "We are pleased to have contributed to a successful outcome of a DMO
programme that sees HMAS Sirius enter service with the Australian Defence
Forces. It proves the worth of BMT’s global network of subsidiaries. It is
heartening that we have been able to bring the specialist experience and skills
we have developed through supporting the RFA for many years and in designing
the Aegir family of oilers, to also satisfy customers' conversion needs across
the globe."
