BMT Goes the Extra Mile to Meet RFA Commitments
Employees of BMT Defence Services Ltd, a subsidiary
of BMT Ltd, have recently returned from Singapore,
where they completed a displacement check on a Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) fleet tanker currently
undergoing refit in the Far East port.
The displacement check enabled the BMT team to calculate the lightship weight of the fleet tanker, RFA
Bayleaf. The lightship weight is the weight of the vessel’s structure, equipment and fittings with the
vessel otherwise empty of payload, fuel, water, ballast, stores and other consumables.
BMT has been supporting the RFA Support Integrated Project Team of the Defence Logistics Organisation
for a number of years. Naval architects, design engineers and consultants have provided a range of
design support and maintenance services from offices in Bath and Weymouth.
Though ship visits are usually conducted on board naval and auxiliary vessels in UK shipyards or British
coastal waters, this is not the first time that BMT employees have travelled abroad to ensure their
assignments fit in with RFA and Royal Navy vessels’ deployment programmes.
